A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents

Teacher Only Day – Thursday 23rd June

Our staff are joining with our Kahui Ako, Community of Learning, for a days professional development  centred on; Te Tiriti O Waitangi, New Zealand Histories Curriculum and to hear from Ngati Whatua O Orakei about their local stories.

The day will begin at 8.30am and conclude at 4pm. All our teaching staff, as well as our part time teachers are attending along with some of our learner assistants and support staff from our school office.

Our four schools, Kohimarama, Orakei, Stonefields and St Thomas’s School are participating to bring a deeper understanding for staff of the Treaty, implications for the NZ Histories Curriculum and understanding of our important local places and perspectives. This in turn will support the delivery of the curriculum and our overall understanding of our local context for learning.

School is closed for all Kohimarama School students on Thursday 23rd as staff are offsite.

Reminder – Matariki

On Wednesday the 22nd of June we will be going on a Hikoi (walk) from School to Kohimarama Beach. On the beach we will welcome in the Matariki Stars with a Karakia and a Waiata. Once we return to school we will have shared kai to continue the celebrations. A coffee cart will be at school from 7am to purchase hot drinks.

Due to the large numbers of students, staff and parents we strongly recommend mask wearing when in close proximity to others in our group. e.g. during the photo on the beach and the breakfast gathering of food in the Hall.

The wearing of masks at this event is to mitigate the risks of transmission of COVID 19 and winter illness. Sanitiser etc will be available as you enter the Hall for breakfast for your use.

Timing

  • 6.40: Hikoi from Kohimarama School, to Kohimarama Beach
  • 7.00: Begin Karakia and Waiata
  • 7.25: Group photo of all who participated in our celebration
  • 7.30: Hikoi back to Kohimarama School
  • 7.50: Karakia mo te kai
  • 7.55: Begin kai
  • 8.55: Begin school day as normal

This is a family event, please feel free to bring grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and siblings along. Everyone is welcome for both the beach welcoming and breakfast.

Breakfast will be a ‘bring a plate’ style shared breakfast. Tables will be set up in the hall and when we have all returned from the beach we will say a Karakia mo te kai before beginning our breakfast feast! Please note – for health reasons, please take into consideration the ease of what you bring for sharing. We will have lots of hand sanitizer available on the day.

A big thank you to Miss Cadzow who is our lead in this. Thank you Kate!

Reporting considerations

While the vast majority of our students have had sufficient time at school for teachers to undertake their assessments and to make an overall professional judgement, a small number of students have not been present to allow the above to occur. These families will be notified by letter ahead of the reports being issued on Friday 8th July. It is highly recommended that these families make time for a Learner Conversation in Week 1 of Term 3.

Term 3 Reminder

Learner Conversations will be held on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th of July. These conversations will use the SchoolTalk report and develop the next learning steps for students. We see this meeting as being an important mid way point in students learning this year and so highly recommend that you take this opportunity to meet with teachers.

The times are as follows;

On Wednesday 27th July, school will finish at 1pm for students. Learner Conversations will be between 1.45pm and 5.45pm and on Thursday 28th July Learner Conversations will be between 3.30pm and 7.45pm.

Bookings for these will open on Monday 27th June at 10am and close on Thursday 7th July at 3pm.

You can book your Learner Conversation as follows:

https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz

Click to make a booking and enter the School Event Code:  htk3k

Then follow the instructions.  You will get a confirmation email to indicate your booking has been made successfully.

Each booking is 15 minutes long.  Please leave a gap between Meeting bookings for your children to allow you to move between the classrooms.

Road works on Rawhitiroa Road

Chorus are laying cables on the school side adjacent to the pedestrian crossing. This has reduced Rawhitiroa Road to one lane for the remainder of this week. Traffic is one way at the moment going up Rawhitiroa Road.

More work will commence later in the term. We will endeavor to keep the community as up to date as possible.

PTA Matariki Quiz-a-thon

A reminder that all students will be participating in the Quiz on Wednesday 22nd June, tomorrow.  The more answers each student gets correct, the better for our fundraising. All the best.

July Roll Returns

Twice a year, all schools in New Zealand are required to furnish to the Ministry of Education a return detailing all students enrolled at their schools. This return determines our funding and staffing for the remainder of the school year. If your child is going to be absent or late for any reason on Friday 1st July the office will require a letter or email from a parent/guardian justifying the student’s absence from school. This correspondence is to be provided to the school office, at office@kohimarama.school.nz, no later than Monday 4th July by 11am. Thank you in advance.

Reporting Absences

Please report absences, sick or holiday by emailing the school office; office@kohimarama.school.nz or by texting the school phone on 022 380 7601. Please include your childs name, room and reason for being absent. The school website ‘Submit an Absence’ is no longer available so please save the email and phone number for reporting absences.

Thank You Kohi Dairy

Welcome to the Library!

Last week we had a very special occasion in the library.  We celebrated the Team Librarians with a delicious morning tea!  Thank you to all wonderful student-librarians for their everyday commitment to their duties, cheerful attitude and willingness to help others in the library.  Without their support the school library won’t be such a lively and friendly place for all of us.

To prepare for the celebration of Matariki we spend the week making Paper lanterns, Star art weaving, Paper chain making and colouring.  It was a great pleasure to see children learning new skills, being creative and sharing their experiences with each other.

Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori! (happy Matariki)
