A Message from the Principal
We are halfway through term 2 and noticing that the weather has decidedly turned cooler. On Friday last we celebrated the success of our students in Years 4-8 at a Sports Assembly. This was to hand out certificates for our Kohimarama School, Senior Swimming Sports held at Sacred heart College on Friday 14th May. It was also an opportunity to again thank Don Forbes, parents and staff who assisted at the event.
NZ Histories Curriculum
As stated in a previous newsletter, the NZ Histories Curriculum is undergoing consultation. Kohimarama School has made a submission on the draft document. This is an ongoing development by the Ministry of Education who have partnered with a wide range of people to design draft Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories curriculum content.
This is part of a wider refresh of the national curriculum to ensure it is fit for purpose now and in the future and supports the languages, identities, cultures and wellbeing of all ākonga, students, in Aotearoa New Zealand.
When final content is approved, updates to the national curriculum (The New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa) will be confirmed by publication in the New Zealand Gazette (often referred to as ‘gazetted’), and the curriculum changes will come into effect in 2022.
Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme (KOS)
Kohimarama School will be undertaking the Keeping Ourselves Safe (KOS) programme later this term. The KOS programme is part of the schools Health Curriculum. This is undertaken on a bi-annual basis. KOS is taught with the assistance of NZ Police and is a national programme.
Keeping Ourselves Safe is a comprehensive child abuse prevention programme for schools. Its purpose is to:
- teach students a range of safe practices that they can use when interacting with other people, both online and face to face
- teach students how to recognise the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships, and encourage students who have been or are being abused to seek help
- prevent abuse by making parents and teachers more aware of their responsibilities to help students avoid abuse.
More information including an invitation to a parent meeting will come via an etap message tomorrow.
Greats and Grans
This wonderful event occurred each year and is an opportunity for;
- Opening Kohimarama School to our community, so they have a greater understanding of the learning environment.
- To afford students the opportunity to share their learning experiences with their oldest relations and for students to learn from their Grandparents about school in their day
We did not hold this event in 2020 due to COVID 19 lockdown and health concerns. We are grateful to have this happening again in 2021.
We have been promised accommodation by the Ministry of Education for term 3 this year that will eleviate the pressure on Cowley team with two classes working in the library. These rooms will be modular and able to be removed when permanent accommodation is created at Kohimarama School. In the meantime our goal is to work with the MOE to deliver a modern building that will enhance the learning environment for our students and teachers.
The Kohimarama Way – Compassion
“If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete.” Jack Kornfield. “Walk a mile in my shoes.” Song. “Don’t do unto others as you would have them do unto you. They may have different tastes.” George Bernard Shaw.
