Seeing double….. or half?

Who remembers being in Room 1 or 2 in the junior school? If the photo on the left looks like it’s only half the picture, don’t worry – your eyes are not deceiving you!

What’s the story? In 1937 a new block was built at Kohimarama school because of an increasing school roll. The new building was originally intended to contain two rooms for infant classes, but it was decided that the numbers did not yet require a whole building. So first one half was built, followed by the other when the roll was large enough to justify it, in 1941. As the NZ Herald reported at the time “…it has been made with a view to allowing the maximum amount of sunlight and air to reach the young children during their hours of instruction. One side is constructed with sliding doors opening practically the whole length onto a spacious veranda, while the opposite side is taken up almost entirely with large windows. In addition, small desks for the infant pupils have been made in wood matching the general design of the interior.”

The desks may have long gone, but we think these classrooms have well and truly stood the test of time and our new entrants and teachers are still very happy there!

Classrooms will be open for our alumni to visit as part of our celebrations on the 11th September. Come and see what’s changed… and what hasn’t! There will be a full day of celebrations and fun, followed by a special gala evening.

We’re still keen to glean as many stories as possible about the school. We’d love to hear your memories, especially what you remember of other students at school who went on to make their mark in the community or beyond. We are also looking for auction items for the gala dinner so please do get in touch if you can assist.
