Year 7/8 Stardome Trip
On Friday the 26th Of February the year 7 & 8 hub went on a trip to Stardome Planetarium
We had a talk with a nice Staff member called Josh. He talked about the distance between planets and the temperatures on the surfaces of them. We also talked about Mars rovers that were sent to space and how they are powered and ones that failed.
Did you know the first ever Rover to touch down onto Mars was called Sojourner and the latest one to touch down was called Perseverance. We then did a quiz around the exhibits and had a bit of exhibit free time.
We went into the Planetarium to watch a movie called We Can Be Astronomers. He also took us round Space and showed us the difference between Solar Systems, Galaxies and Universes. The difference between Solar Systems and Galaxies is that there are millions of solar systems in a galaxy and billions of galaxies in the universe, however there is only one universe.
Overall our trip to stardome was a really great and interesting experience.

Thursday’s Unplugged – Wearable Arts
Over the past 3 weeks, the Snell Wearable Arts class have been creating Wearable Art Hats! Everyone was given a template as a foundation to create their masterpiece. Their design brief was to be as creative as can be – no theme, no limits and the results were fantastic. Last Thursday, they wrote their Design Cards and their hats were presented in the form of an Art Gallery – please see some of the wonderful Hats and imaginative Design Cards below! These hats are now in Room 22 – please come and check them out.
This activity was designed to get their creative juices flowing. The next challenge that has been set will allow them to enter their hats into the World of Wearable Arts Competition. If they choose to enter, they will need to work in teams of 2-5 people and choose from one of the themes – Aotearoa, Extreme Accessories, xxx, or Other (no set theme). The idea is to move away from using ‘craft-like’ materials in their hats and think outside the box. These hats must also be student creations only – no Teacher or Parent help! We are excited to see what will be created next …
