A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents

I am sure you are aware of the Black Lives Matter campaign that started in the US and has since gone global. It has also been big in New Zealand. We are truly shocked by the events that led to the deaths of two African Americans and we do not condone racism in any form at Kohimarama School.

After discussion as a school, we decided it was better for the students to discuss the issue with their parents at home rather than through the school.

As a school, our focus is on teaching the New Zealand curriculum and topics like identity and racism are topics explored by year 7 and 8 students as part of that curriculum. That’s the age that is deemed appropriate for schools to get involved. This is not to say that our teachers don’t answer questions about issues like this from students, but this is done factually without emotion or elaboration.

Kohimarama School puts a lot of work in teaching our values, the Kohimarama way and our learner dispositions. We work towards living these in through our school interactions. Our motto; Enter to learn, Leave to serve drives this work.

We felt that it is important to provide you with the considerations that schools take when events such as the Mosque shootings, Christchurch earthquakes, COVID 19 and the BLM campaign come upon us. We consult with our Board Chair and senior staff in the first instance and take advice on these matters from a number of sources including the Ministry of Education.

Our focus is always on the students and their families. A balanced approach, in partnership with families, allows for your discretion on the introduction of topics such as this to your children. This approach has supported students understanding, at their appropriate level, on matters such as those listed above.

Term 2 Student Achievement Discussion and Reporting

As we are all aware the COVID 19 pandemic has caused disruption to the normal school assessment and reporting cycles. At Kohimarama School we had to cancel our initial Student Achievement Discussion scheduled at the end of term 1 2020, due to being in lockdown.

On returning to school we placed great emphasis on student wellbeing and allaying anxiety and settling them into the school routine again. This has been ongoing and we are seeing students settling into learning and school routine.

As you would appreciate, sending home a written report based on assessment information has been difficult to do immediately on return to school as it would likely not provide us with reliable data. Here is an article by the New Zealand Assessment Institute

We have scheduled Student Achievement Discussions to be held at the end of Term 2 (week 12, 1st & 2nd July).  At this student achievement discussion you can expect a one page document giving you a visual picture of how your child is tracking towards achieving the expected outcomes by the end of the school year in reading, writing and mathematics. This document will provide you with the next learning steps and areas for development. The Student Achievement Discussion will be undertaken with you and your child. We have asked students to share a completed piece of work that they are proud of to discuss with you.

At the end of term 3 2020 we will hold our usual Student Achievement Discussions finishing with our usual SchoolTalk report at the end of the year.

Details of the Student Achievement Discussions are as follows:
Wednesday 1st July – Students to be collected at 1pm
1.30pm-6pm – Student Achievement Discussions
Thursday 2nd July – Normal school programme
3.30pm-8pm – Student Achievement Discussions

Bookings are open and will close on Monday 29th June at 9am. To book a Student Achievement Discussion, please go to : Click  ‘make a booking’ and enter the School Event Code : s7d2w then follow the instructions. If for any reason you are unable to access this site or you experience any problems, please contact Karen at the school office on 930 9820.

Each discussion booking is 15 minutes long.  To ensure the smooth running of this for everyone, please ensure that you arrive in time for your booked appointment.  The end of the discussion will be a school bell.

Questions and Answers

Q: Where can I get advice regarding talking to my children about online issues. ie Online bullying, inappropriate viewing, online grooming and device usage?

A: There is currently an online campaign called Keep It Real Online. This not only talks about issues that are arising with the use of devices, It also has links to where you can get help. This is a great website for parents to read over when they have a chance.

Q: If you are needing help with SchoolTalk, Family Zone, BYOD  or have questions. Who could you contact?

A: We now have an email dedicated to support IT issues; This email is monitored by Myana who takes care of the administration side of apps and Monique who looks after the staff and learning side of apps.
