A Message from the Principal
Good afternoon everyone.
We have been fortunate to have weather that continues to be warm and sunny allowing students to have time outside for physical education, sport and play.
Activities Fees
Students have already been on a number of Activities over the first 5 weeks of school namely; Yr 7&8 to the Maritime Museum, Yr 6 to the Water Safety Programme at Panmure Leisure Centre, Yr 7&8 to the Globe as part of their Shakespeare study, the senior school, to our Swimming Sports and today Years 4 & 6 to the Auckland museum. Thank you all for paying your Activity fees because this enables us to plan for and enjoy opportunities to support learning.
Pre Enrolment for siblings
We have started the year with 528 students. This is an additional 23 students up on 2019. As at 2 March this had grown to 539 and is continuing to grow. If you have children (or know of children) turning 5 this year and who live in zone or attend our local ECEs, please have them contact the School Office to start the enrolment process as soon as possible. This helps us manage our class sizes and ensure we have the teaching staff and resources in place for the students starting later in the year.
COVID 19 from our schools perspective
There are no cases of COVID 19 in any school in New Zealand at this time. However we are taking steps to be proactive and ensure that we can be prepared for any eventuality.
What is happening at Kohimarama School?
The School is prepared and has a Pandemic Plan in place.
The school continues to update the community as it becomes available through the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education via eTap messages
Our School Docs page has a statement about COVID 19 which has links to the MOE and MOH and advice.
There are no cases of COVID 19 in any school in New Zealand at this time,
If cases did develop in our area, only the Medical Officer for Health can close a school or schools.
We are working with students on handwashing and hygiene.
The cleaning contractors have moved up their routines to clean all surfaces and door handles (high touch contact areas) each day with a stronger disinfectant.
What can parents do?
Keep students home if they are unwell.
Reiterate handwashing and hygiene messages
Request approval for time away from school in term time as usual.
Adhere to current recommendations regarding self-isolation after travel
Information for travellers
All travellers returning from or who have transited through Mainland China, Iran, Northern Italy and South Korea are being asked to self isolate for 14 days.
Travellers from Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore Thailand and Italy are advised to ring the Healthline if they develop symptoms and to self isolate.
Questions and Answers
Q: Why has Kohimarama School adopted some of the teaching pedagogy and tools used by other schools?
A: Kohimarama School has been focusing on our student needs in a modern world. Teaching pedagogy has had to change along with our world views.
Achievement in Mathematics and Literacy are most important and we continue to successfully raise our student achievement in both these areas against Nationally Standardised and Normed testing. Achieving at or above 96% in Reading and Mathematics makes us an outlier in the New Zealand demographic. This continued rise to a new high level of achievement is backed by our pedagogy supporting learner agency.
We use the SchoolTalk tool to enhance and make visible the agency for the child. The tool enables students to share their learning with each other and with you and to provide them with direction around why they are successful, what they need to learn next and what to focus on. We monitor their progress against our countrywide standardised measure, the New Zealand Curriculum.
While we have made changes to teaching and learning (pedagogy) and some of the tools we use to provide the Rich Record of Learning for students, teachers and parents, Kohimarama School does this in our own way to meet the needs of our learners and provide them with the opportunities to maximise, personalise and build capability. In an exponentially changing world knowledge and being a capable self directed learner along with the soft skills such as empathy and collaboration etc are the currency of the future. Teacher Only Days
Please be aware of Teacher Only Days for this year. Tuesday 2nd June & Tuesday 27th October.
Student Fundraiser – Hilarious Hat Day Friday 28th Marc
Our Student Council has organised a Hilarious Hat Day fundraiser for our World Vision child, Nurnobi. Students are encouraged to wear mufti (their usual weekend clothes), bring $2 and wear a hat. There will be House Points in each class awarded to the Tallest, Most Creative and Wackiest hat.
Phone Permission
We do not recommend that students bring cellphones to school. Cellphones are not necessary to have during the day. However, we understand that some parents like their children to have a phone to communicate with them after school. Cell phones may be confiscated if a child does not have permission to have the device at school or if they are not following the school guidelines. To complete the phone permission form, please click here.
