A Message from Kiri Team

Tena Koutou Katoa

Week 3 already! Hasn’t the weather been amazing and what a lovely buzz of learning is out there.

We are very excited in Kiri Team to continue Discovery learning this year. A discovery program uses play as a context for learning. Children can explore, experiment, discover and solve problems in imaginative and playful ways. Play supports positive attitudes towards learning.

A play-based approach involves both child-initiated and teacher-supported learning. The teacher encourages children’s learning and inquiry through interactions that aim to stretch their thinking to higher levels. Children are supported in developing social skills such as cooperation, sharing and responding to ideas, negotiating, and resolving conflicts. We are also supporting the development of these social skills through our Inquiry into emotions. The children have been arriving with big smiles and are ready to start the day.

The Kohimarama Way this term is Commitment and children have been learning what this means to them through role play, stories, and pictures. They are learning how to keep trying when the learning gets difficult.

We would like to thank Ngaere for working so hard to keep our Kiri gardens beautiful all year round.

Haere ra, Kiri Team

The Kohimarama Way – Commitment

We know we are being committed successfully when;  we think before making a promise, keep every agreement we make, make decisions confidently, go the extra mile, give 100% to everything we do and are faithful to people we care about.

Meet the Teacher Evening

We invite all parents/caregivers of the Kohimarama School Learning Community to attend our annual Meet the Teacher Evening.

Commencing at 7pm in the school hall, we would like to share with you information regarding school developments, take time to reflect on 2019, introduce our staff and hear from our Board of Trustees and PTA.  It is envisaged that this will take around 25 minutes.

After that you will move off and meet with your childs team and meet their teacher.

Teacher Only Days

Please be aware of Teacher Only Days for this year. Tuesday 2nd June & Tuesday 27th October.

ICAS Assessments

Kohimarama School will no longer be offering ICAS assessments for our students.  These assessments were ‘extra’ for students and the results from these were not used for future learning with our students.  We believe that PAT (Progress and Achievement tests)  give valuable and more useable information about our students.  These tests are nationally normed and specific for New Zealand students.  Kohimarama students sit these tests from Year 3 to Year 8 twice a year, from this data we are able to see where our students’ knowledge is now, and where the gaps are and at the end of the year we are able to see if students have improved.  The information from these tests are used by our teachers in their class programmes, specifically for students learning.

Basketball Trials – Friday 21st February

Please go to Kindo to register your child for Basketball. Registration close Wednesday 19th February at 5pm.

Year 7 & 8 – 8am – 9.30am

Year 6 – 9.30am – 11pm

Kapa Haka

Kapa haka will start in Week 5 and will be in the hall on Wednesday mornings from 7.50am – 8.40am. All ages are welcome!

Senior School Swimming Sport (Years 5-8) Thursday 5th March

We warmly welcome you to come and support our first sporting event for 2020. Our swimming sports will be held at Sacred Heart indoor pool (244 W Tamaki Rd, Glen Innes).

Students will need to be at school no later than 8.20am on Thursday 5 March. We will then depart Kohimarama School at 8.30am via buses. Students are expected to travel to and from our swimming sports by bus and remain at school till 3pm as usual. Cones will be placed along Rawhitiroa Road so the buses are able to park.

Swim Races 9.00am—1.30pm-ish. Please find the order of events listed below. We are unable to give you accurate times for each event.

We require some parent helpers on the day. Please email Anna-Lena Lockie, if you are able to help.
