A Message from the Principal

Dear parents and caregivers

As has been previously communicated, Kohimarama School has partnered with Family Zone.

This is part of our ongoing commitment to educational excellence and our legal responsibility – duty of care- to ensure our students’ safety and well-being by providing a safe physical and emotional environment for our students, our school has partnered with Family Zone.

Family Zone provides a broad suite of cyber safety services which help school communities keep students safe online. They provide tools for both the school and families to use to gain visibility and management over children’s internet access, regardless of internet connection. Their unique ecosystem allows school communities to work collaboratively so students are safe online on all devices and all networks, all the time. Please note the meeting time below in your diary.

Cyber Safety Information Evening
Family Zone app and router works across every device, everywhere.
Thursday 21 Nov | 7 pm – 8 pm in Snell Team Rm 19&20

You’ll receive more information regarding Family Zone in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please read the information below to understand how Family will help the school community to keep students safe online.

On the School Network

Family Zone School Manager will provide visibility and management when students are connected to the school network during school hours. This will help keep students safe and focussed online. To access the internet via the school network students devices must be protected by the Mobile Zone application. Read on for information on Mobile Zone. Learn more

Off the School Network During School Hours

Family Zone’s Mobile Zone application can keep students safe when they choose to use unsafe networks (eg mobile data), during school hours. Mobile Zone will enforce the school’s acceptable ICT usage policy and prevent students accessing inappropriate content. Any device a student brings to school, needs to be protected by the Mobile Zone app. Learn more

For Families Outside School Hours

Parents can choose to use Family Zone Insights outside of school hours to monitor internet usage on up to 6 devices with Mobile Zone activated. Insights provides snapshots of usage and detailed reports, along with visibility into installed apps and device location (when activated by parents). To use Family Zone Insights you need to set up your FREE account, see details below. Learn more

School-Issued Google Accounts

We will be deploying a Chrome extension to all school-issued Google accounts. The extension will activate only when students are logged into Chrome with their school-issued Google account and connected to the school network (ie. it will NOT activate off school network). This will apply when students are signed into Chrome on a Chromebook, Mac or Windows laptops and desktops.

 Family Zone Accounts for Families

The school will work with Family Zone to create a private Family Zone account for every family. You will receive an email from Family Zone with instructions to activate your account.

Authority To Be Contacted By Family Zone

To streamline the process of creating accounts for school families, we will provide your name, email address, children’s names and birthdates to Family Zone.

Privacy and Security

Please be assured that our school and Family Zone take your privacy and security seriously. For more information – Privacy and Customer Detail & Security Policy.

 Opting Out

If you don’t wish to use Family Zone outside of school hours, please respond  to this email to opt out. Please note, if you decide to opt out, a Family Zone account will NOT be made for you, however your child’s internet access during school hours will STILL be required to adhere with our acceptable ICT usage policy, including with regards to unsafe networks (eg Mobile data).

We are committed to ensuring our students get the very best education and in today’s fast moving times, technology is a tool that supports future focused learning. However, it’s abundantly clear to all, that technology can expose our children to risks. Our school is choosing to step-up up to these challenges and we do so in full confidence that we’ll receive the support of our fantastic school community

The Kohimarama Way – Compassion

Compassion begins by noticing when someone seems sad or troubled.  Put yourself in their place and ask how you would feel if it were happening to you.  Think about how you can help.  Take time to listen, and then say kind things like “What are you sad about?”and “How can I help?”Be forgiving when others make mistakes.  Be a friend when someone needs a friend.
