A Message from the Principal

Welcome back to Term 4.  As usual this will be a busy term for all our students and staff.

I have just returned from my sabbatical in Term 3.  It has been wonderful to meet many of you in the playground and at the crossing and be warmly welcomed back to the Kohimarama School community. Thank you.

During my sabbatical, I was fortunate to spend time in the US (Chicago and New York) and Europe (Netherlands, France, Spain and Italy) where I had the opportunity to have conversations with experts about our learning process here at Kohimarama School. In comparing and contrasting, it is reassuring to know that the efforts that we have been making to prepare our students for the future of learning is in line with what other governments and learning organisations are doing around the world.  Our students are learning skills and developing capabilities that are at the forefront of current practice. The world that our children are part of, continues to be complex and ever-changing where continual learning will be the enabler supporting their ongoing journey. I really enjoyed the opportunity to continue my learning alongside colleagues from overseas.

Please look at the Learning Approach section of the website to see the work that Kohimarama School is doing regarding future focused learning. https://www.kohimarama.school.nz/learning/our-learning-approach/

I would like to say a special thank you to Meegan Hill and Debbie Ellery for the work that they did for me in their roles as Co-Principals in my absence. This was a huge workload for them both.  Thank you to our staff and community for supporting Meegan and Debbie in Term 3.

The Kohimarama Way – Compassion

Compassion is having kind feelings toward someone who is hurt or troubled.  It is caring deeply and wanting to help, even if you don’t know them.  It is being kind and forgiving to someone who has hurt you.

News

Teacher Only Day on Tuesday 29th October

Please note we have a Teacher Only Day on Tuesday 29th of October. Please ensure you have made other arrangements for your children.

2020 Class Placement Requests

This is the time of the year when the Senior Management Team are looking at our roll numbers and staffing needs and the preparation of classes for 2020.  The process of placing children in classes is based on a range of information we have related to each child’s academic needs, achievements and social relationships.  It is a complex process to create the right balance in each class and meet the best interests of all our children, one that we take very seriously.

We invite you to provide us with any request for the placement of your child for 2020.  You can email classplacements2020@kohimarama.school.nz

We will consider all such requests although we are unable to guarantee that we can accommodate them.  Please provide all requests before midday, Friday 1st November.

Students Leaving

If your child is not returning to Kohimarama School for 2020, please send a formal email to classplacements2020@kohimarama.school.nz This helps us with classroom planning. Please provide all requests before midday, Friday 1st November.

Family Zone Meeting Postponed

The Family zone Meeting that was scheduled for tomorrow night will now be on the 21st of November. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

We welcome you to join us in the school hall to find out how we at Kohimarama school are making devices at school even more secure and how you can do the same at home, if you wish.  There will be spot prizes that are definitely worth coming along for. We hope to see you there.

Greats and Grans Day – Friday 25th October 9.00am – 11.25am

We are very excited to once again welcome our students’ Grandparents, elderly neighbour or family friend for our Greats and Grans morning on Friday 25th October. We invite visitors to come to the school any time between 9.00 am and 11.25 am and visit classrooms and participate in special activities.

Morning tea will be provided at 10.00 am in the hall during the morning break time. You are welcome to come for some or all of the morning, whatever suits.

This is the Friday before Labour Day so we are hoping this will enable Grandparents and other special older family members and friends to combine a weekend visit with a morning at school.

After School Activities

All after school activities are run through individual providers. We are the venue provider but do not operate these programs. If you are unsure if the program is running please contact the provider directly as the school office does not get any updates.

Naming your children’s uniform

In term 3 we have had hundreds of dollars worth of clothing come through the office unnamed. Please name your children’s clothing, as we can help assist in getting their uniform back to them if it is named.

2019 Remuera Zoe Rehu Tai Festival Speech Competition

Congratulations to our 5 students who made it through to this inter school competition.  We were one of twenty-one schools who competed where our students performed with confidence, were well prepared and rehearsed with their clearly constructed works.  This year for the first time, 3 more categories have been added – Rap, Spoken Word Poetry and Flash Talk.  Along with the Persuasive speeches, students are given a variety of ways to get their message across.
Years 5 and 6
Persuasive Speech = Hunter D, Flash Talk – Monty N and Spoken Word Poetry = Mia P
Years 7 and 8
Persuasive Speech = Luke DP and Flash Talk = Sean K

Flippa Ball

We would like to invite year 2 pupils that are interested in joining next year to the practice sessions this term (4 sessions). This will enable them to give it a go before joining the year 3/4 team in the first term. Year 3-5 pupils that have though about joining are welcome to join us as well to try it out. Practice sessions are on Thursday mornings from 7 – 8 am. Please get in contact with Aldo Coetzee (aldo.coetzee@gmail.com / 0211860934) if you have any questions or to arrange a “test drive”.

Term 3 Y 7/8 Basketball – Kohi Lakers

With 6 straight wins the Kohi Lakers made it to the playoffs for first and second.  Unfortunately the winning streak didn’t continue but second was a fantastic result after a very challenging first term.  Well done to coach Chris for getting the team to the finals.
Lachie M, Thomas F, Toby H, Matthew B, Lachlainn M, Nathan G (absent Sean K).  Also, thanks to Aidan M and Henry M for helping the team out on the finals night.
