A Message from Hillary Team

Performing arts has been fun! So far we have learned drama with Miss van Roon and Mrs Snell. We had to make lots of skits and the people had to guess how we were feeling. We also did an activity where people had to guess what people were acting out. We have also been doing music in Room 17 with Mrs Flowers and Mrs Potgieter. One part was when we had to guess what type of instrument made a certain sound, it was really hard because the instruments sounded so similar, like a harp and a violin. Next week we are going to do a tempo quiz. Tempo is another word for  how fast or slow your music is. We are also going to be doing dance. Dance sounds very fun to do because we will hopefully do lots of cool dances. We will also learn new dances to. We like to dance with actions and music.

This term we have had a choice of topics to learn about in Inquiry.  Based on the series, Our Planet, the three topics we chose from were forests, coastal seas, and frozen worlds.  Students in the forest group learnt about deforestation, how trees are important in recycling Co2, and the different types of animals in forests.  In Coastal Seas, students learnt about the effects of climate change in the sea, underwater food chains, and overfishing. In Frozen Worlds, students learned about global warming, melting ice, and animals on ice.  All of these worlds are in danger of climate change and human impacts. We also learnt how to show ‘Kaitiakitanga’ which means ‘Guardianship’. It is up to us to save our planet.

The Kohimarama Way – Friendliness

“Don’t wait for people to be friendly…show them how.”  “A little spark of kindness can put a colossal burst of sunshine into someone’s day.” “Keep smiling because optimism and friendliness will take you everywhere.”

Out of Zone Ballot

The BOT has informed us that there will be no out of zone ballot for the 2020 school year.

NIWA – Auckland Science Fair

Congratulations to the students who went through to the Auckland Science Fair competition, what an achievement to put your work before a panel of judges, after all the time and effort you put in.  Our school finalists were:
Sean  and Lukas                   Five second Rule.  True or false you can still eat if the food has only been on the floor for 5 seconds
Matthew and Lachlainn       Scooter side car.  Now you can go grocery shopping on your scooter as well.
Zoe C and Maia                   Mistaken Makeup. Testing real vs fake makeup
Nya and Margo                   Solar powered, portable phone charger
Benji                                    Snails and the silt. Mark-Recapture method to measure marine snail populations.
Major congratulations to Benji who won first place for his science investigation.  This means Benji’s work was judged to be the best Year 7 and 8 entry, in the whole of Auckland – what an achievement.

School Speech Finals 2019

Thank you to all our finalists for your hard work and ability to stand in front of such a big audience and perform so well.  We had two new categories this year:
Flash Talk – 10 slides of 10 seconds each on auto play.  The slides can only be visual images and students then speak to the slides, with no cue cards.  Spoken Word Poetry – student write their own poem, no cue cards, 2 minutes.  The poem must be reflective and touch on the identity of the student’s point of view at an individual, cultural and societal level.  Congratulations to our winners:
