A Message from Cowley Team
Cowley’s Trip to MOTAT
Last week all of Cowley team visited MOTAT as part of our studies on Imagination, Invention and Innovation. We had a fabulous time! The Year 2 students spent the day there on Tuesday and the Year 3’s on Wednesday.
The children got to explore the site, go on a tram ride and spend time with a MOTAT Educator who led them in activity around inventing a machine.
The children especially enjoyed the telephone exhibit which showcased telephones right from Alexander Graham Bell’s invention and then communication through the years. They got to ring each other using older models of telephones, and some even rang their family members and left messages. Some of the children also learnt about morse code and had a go at tapping out their names.
Another highlight was exploring the Innovators exhibition which highlighted key inventions and innovations that New Zealanders had developed and that were having an impact on the world around them such as Springfree trampolines (which they got to try out), and Rocketlab.
Once all the exploring had been done (and the tram ride completed) each class got to spend time with a MOTAT Educator who gave them the challenge of inventing a machine that could cause a chain reaction and knock down a small block. The children were in groups of 4 to 5 and had to collaborate and work as a team to complete the task. They learned first hand what it must be like as an inventor, having to make ‘prototypes’, conduct multiple tests to see if their design would be successful, be persistent and see the task through. It was also a valuable experience for them to realise that inventions happen often as the result of several people working together to solve a problem.
It was wonderful to see all the different innovative designs the children created and the success they had at getting their machine to work.
Thank you MOTAT!

A fine demonstration of Kohimarama Values
A fine demonstration of Kohimarama Values of commitment and reliability. The attached photos show the two year 3 Kohimarama netball teams on the last Thursday of last term during an horrendous storm. As you can see, the normally packed netball stadium was close to empty as so many teams just bailed. But, not the Kohi year 3s! Out of 5 teams that actually showed up (normally there would be about 40) TWO of them were our girls and their passionate coaches. They demonstrated a passion for the game and resilience in seeing their games through despite the weather. Thank you to these girls and their coaches for representing us so well. We are proud of you.
