A Message from the Principal
I am out of school at the moment recovering from surgery. I am hoping to be back at school very soon. Thank you to Debbie and Meegan who are covering in my absence and thank you to the many families who have sent me get well messages.
Congratulations everyone on the can collection for the City Mission last week. It is great that our families can come together to support families in need.
Last week was National Volunteers Week. Every day in our school we have parents/caregivers volunteering their time to support our school and students. The roles they undertake are wide and varied and our school could not operate on a day to day basis without this support. On behalf of the Kohimarama School Learning Community – thank you.
The school is also supported by those people who volunteer by being a member of our PTA and Board of Trustees. Our new Board of Trustees are meeting for the first time on Monday 1st July. Thank you to our Board members who play such an important role in the governance of Kohimarama School. Our newly elected Board of Trustees are: Brad Dunstan, Kristin Sutherland, Matt Bolger, Kathryn Furness and Craig Jordan working alongside myself and our school representative, Carrie Mills.
These last weeks of term 2 are busy. Teachers are finalising school reports ready to be released on Friday 5th July, we have the quizathon, sporting events and trips. Everyone will be looking forward to a relaxing term break.

The Kohimarama Way – Reliability
“You need not wonder whether you should have an unreliable person as a friend. An unreliable person is nobody’s friend.” Reflections . “I shed a tear when I meet somebody who always quits. Reliable people are so rare in this world.” Some Inspiration for the Overenthusiastic. “It has always been my contention that an individual who can be relied upon to be himself and to be honest unto himself can be relied upon in every other way.” How to Be Rich
MindLab
On Friday the 21st of June the Year 4 and 5 students went to Mind lab at Motat as part of our topic on imagination. The first programme included working with an app on the computer called sculptris to make 3D creations.
We completed challenges like making a scary face, cute face, and something that included the beach. We learnt new ideas and skills that made our designs more realistic.
Some of the Year 4 students created dogs, pigs, penguins, and many more 3D creations.
The second programme at MindLab was Science and Engineering. We had to make a car using building blocks, plastic circles, skewers, a small fan and battery powered motor. The challenges were to make it move and to put the wheels on. We had to work really hard on it. Our goal was to make it go fast and straight. The fan made the car move fast. We really enjoyed making this car because we worked together and used our imagination.
Overall we had a great time at MindLab learning about 3D design and Science and Engineering.

Roll Return July 2019
Twice a year, in March and July, all schools in New Zealand are required to furnish to the Ministry of Education a return detailing all students enrolled at their schools. This return determines our funding and staffing for the remainder of the school year. If your child is going to be absent or late for any reason on Monday 1 July the Office will require a letter or email from a parent/guardian justifying the student’s absence from school. This correspondence is to be provided to the School Office, at office@kohimarama.school.nz, no later than 11.00am on Tuesday 2nd July. It is also important that the addresses we hold in our student management system are correct and up to date. If you have any changes please email the office. Thank you in advance to everyone for assisting us completing this important task in an accurate and timely manner.
Uniform Shop
We are pleased to advise that retail and online purchasing of school uniform will now be available from the School Uniform Centre in Remuera effective 3 July 2019. The benefits to families are longer opening hours, availability of stock, free delivery of online orders as well as a loyalty programme and as a one stop shop for school footwear and school bags. Tuesday 2nd July will be the last day that school uniform will be available to purchase on site.
New Entrant Parent Information Meeting – Wednesday 3rd July 11.30am
If your child has recently started school, or will be next term, and you have not come along to our previous parent meeting, please come along and hear about the Kiri Team programme. It is an opportunity to meet with Anne Bradley the Team Leader and Meegan Hill Deputy Principal responsible for Kiri Team. We will be meeting in the school hall. We look forward to meeting you and shedding light on the first year at school. This is a parent meeting and not appropriate for pre-schoolers, apologies in advance.
School Disco
A reminder to all that our school disco is at the beginning of Term 3, it is our second week back, Friday 2nd August. Junior Disco is Years 0-4 at 5.30 – 6.30pm and Senior Disco is Years 5-8 at 7.00-8.30pm. The Disco is held in the hall and we will be selling tickets outside the hall Weeks 1 and 2 next term, before and after school.
Pizza Fridays
As the cold weather approaches, the appeal for a Friday ice block may not be as appealing as it is on a hot sunny day! Commencing Friday 26th July and for every Friday in term 3, we are trialing Pizza Fridays. For $2 kids will be able to purchase a slice of Domino’s pizza – choice of two pizza flavours: cheese or ham & pineapple.
Please note; only one slice of pizza per child each Friday will be provided.
No change to times or location – 1.15-1.30pm on Friday from hall school kitchen.
For those kids who still prefer an ice block, we will have a few available for sale.
