A Message from Hillary Team
Technology Challenges!
Year 4
Over the past few weeks, we have been working on technology challenges. Some of the challenges we have come across are who can make the marble furthest away from the table, or make a bridge out of 15 pieces of newspaper and 2 meters of tape. Also, who could hold the ping pong ball in the air for the longest in our creation of paper and other things.
We enjoyed it because it was exciting and fun. We used teamwork a lot. During these activities, we shared our ideas and before we started, we planned our ideas. We shared our creations and gave feedback to see what could make our technology more successful.
Year 5
This term in Hillary Team, we have been learning about technology. We have learnt that technology is not devices, technology is anything that is made to solve a problem. As part of technology, we had to design and make an egg protector so that we can drop an egg in it and the egg will not crack. Before we started, we had to draw up a plan of our egg protector and then make it using recycled materials. We learnt that if you put plastic bags on it, then it will act like a parachute, and if you add too much weight then it will go down too fast and crack. Another thing that we learned was that if we wrap the egg in something like foam, sponge or bubble wrap, it would protect it and it wouldn’t weigh it down. Also, that it wasn’t rolling around in the box but it was tight and compact. We dropped the egg firstly from 1 metre and then 2, 3, 4 and 5 metres on concrete. After the 5 metre drop, there were only 6 surviving groups. We think that everyone found the technology egg drop challenge really fun and enjoyable and we would want to do it again.

Thank you to everyone who put your names forward to be part of our school’s Board of Trustees for 2019. We would like to congratulate the following people who have been successfully elected to the school’s new board:

Parent Information Evening – SchoolTalk and Reports – Tuesday 18th June at 7pm
Thank you to the people who have replied to our invitation to attend this meeting this evening at 7.00pm in Room 19. This is an opportunity for parents to familiarise themselves with how to access and read SchoolTalk and reports. We look forward to seeing you there.
The Auckland City Mission Can Appeal
Thank you to all who supported our annual can appeal for the Auckland City Mission. By bringing one or two cans, you have ensured that families who need help at this time, receive a much needed box of consumables. We really appreciate your generosity. We received a total of 873 cans.
Pedestrian Crossing
Thank you to the students and parents who support our children by staying safe and using our crossings on Kohimarama and Rawhitiroa Roads. Our road patrollers are trained to ensure the road is safe before they open the signs, sometimes this means we have to wait a little while before we can cross, thank you for your patience. When picking up and dropping off your children please do not park on the yellow lines or over our neighbours driveways as this makes it very difficult for the road patrollers to see the road and be able to open the signs safely.
Lost Property
As we near the end of Term 2 our lost property bins are overflowing. Please pop into the hall over the next few weeks and check for anything you have lost.
