A Message from the Principal

As we near the end of another busy term, we wish everyone from the Kohimarama School Learning Community a relaxing term break.

Our students have done well through a very hot term and have settled into the new school year.

Our calendar has been full with a large number of Education Outside the Classroom activities including museum trips, visit to the Pop up Globe, beach picnic, Ruapotaka Marae in Glen Innes and activities at Vector Wero Whitewater Park.  There have been a number of sporting events including softball competition and swimming sports.  Many classes have taken advantage of the warm summer days for family get togethers.  Kiri Team held a very successful team picnic on the school lawn supported by a number of our senior student leaders.

Thank you to our teachers for supporting all the events held this term.  It has been a busy term for our team with many teachers involved with Professional Learning and Development opportunities.  Thank you also to our teachers for their time and input to our Student Achievement Discussions later this week.

We look forward to another busy and exciting time ahead in Term 2.  Enjoy your break.

Student Achievement Discussions – Wednesday 10th April and Thursday 11th April 2019

Each discussion booking is 15 minutes long.  To ensure the smooth running of this for everyone, please ensure that you arrive in time for your booked appointment.  The end of the discussion will be by a school bell.

Please contact your teacher directly if you need to discuss your achievement discussion booking.

Wednesday 10th April – School will finish for students at 3.00pm (as usual) with discussions starting after that time

Thursday 11th April –  School will finish for the students at 1.00pm with discussions starting at 1.30pm

We will have some capacity to supervise students in the hall where parents are unable to make alternative arrangements.  It is important that your child’s classroom teacher is informed by 9.00am on the morning of Thursday 11th April if you would like your child supervised in the hall.

Meeting on Use of Devices at Kohimarama School – Tuesday 14th May at 7pm

We invite all parents/caregivers to attend this meeting on Tuesday 14th May at 7pm held in the Hall.

The purpose of this meeting is to bring together all the questions, feedback and comments on the use of devices at Kohimarama School to enhance our learning across our different year groups.

Two experts will be speaking on the use of devices both at school and at home.

Mark Osborne – Mark is currently working with the teachers in the school to develop Learner Agency and Differentiation in our classrooms.  He is currently doing PhD studies through Monash University  and will talk about the research, pros and cons and the usage of devices across schools in New Zealand.

Attitude – An organisation associated with The Parenting Place.  They work with schools across New Zealand to educate students on how to be safe while using devices.

We would encourage all parents to attend this meeting.

Road Works

The crossing project is now complete and our crossing is again operational.  We would like to thank the contractors for the support that they have provided in ensuring our students have travelled safely to and from school.  Thank you to our parent and teacher road patrollers who have supported students and their families cross safely in what have been quite challenging and changeable situations.

We have been advised that the second part of the curb and channelling work will be completed over the term break.  If for any chance this rolls into Term 2, then we will endeavour to inform you all of how this impacts travel around school as quickly as we can and again work with the contractors to ensure that a safe crossing plan is in place.

Note that the road closure currently in place is due to the road works being completed further up Kohimarama Road.

Cowley Team Cultural Exploration Day

Cowley team had a great day last Friday where parents came in and led workshops on an aspect of their culture.  The children got to dance, create and hear special stories about all the wonderful countries that their friends and families have come from.  It really enriched the children’s learning and helped them think about their own learning and cultural identity.  Thank you to all the parents who came and gave up their time.  It was a great day.

The Kohimarama Way – Respect

Respect is an attitude of caring about people and treating them with dignity.  Respect is valuing ourselves and others.  We show respect by speaking and acting with courtesy.  When we are respectful we treat others as we want to be treated.  Respect includes honouring the rules of our family or school, which make life more orderly and peaceful.  It is knowing that every man, woman and child deserves respect, including you.
