A Message from the Principal
With the events of last Friday still very much in our thoughts, I would like to acknowledge the staff of Kohimarama School for the way in which they supported students and put into action a positive response, that we can do something small to say that we are thinking about and supportive of our fellow Muslim New Zealanders. I’d like to thank the parents who have acknowledged the above and appreciated the communication from the school. Your feedback was very welcome.
In this particular situation the school crisis plan is implemented and, over the weekend, a draft response is created for the school. Meetings for Team Leaders and teachers were set up via email and organised for Monday morning.
On Monday morning, the Leadership Team met to discuss a draft crisis plan. The plan needed to take into account the needs of staff and students and ensure that it responded positively ensuring students were able to feel safe and secure at school.
Teaching staff met shortly afterward, where the plan implementation and resources were shared to ensure that teachers were confident and capable of carrying out a conversation with their students. We talked further about the differentiated approach across the age groups, focusing on positive support and actions.
On Monday, our students discussed our positive response and prepared cards. The cards were ready by 1.00 pm and delivered to both the Ponsonby (Al-Masjid Al-Jamie) Mosque and Starship Hospital. The student leaders represented the school in both venues.
Today, our mufti day is another positive action that we, as a Kohimarama School learning community, can undertake to practically support the people captured in the event. Thank you for the way that you, as a parent community, have worked with us to ensure a settled, safe community for all our students.

Tomorrow’s Schools (Haque) Report
We have received an invite to our families to an information evening held by the Hon Nikki Kaye (National spokesperson for Education) in the Glendowie College School Hall to discuss the Tomorrow’s Schools report.
The details of the evening are:
Venue: Glendowie College School Hall
Date: Wednesday 27th March
Time: 7.00 pm – 8.30 pm
The Hon Nikki Kaye will discuss the contents of the report and its implications for schools, parents, whānau and students. She will then respond to questions from the audience. Our local MP, Mr Simon O’Connor, will also attend the meeting.
We encourage you to attend this evening and learn more about this very important review of education in New Zealand. You are welcome to invite friends and family.
Pre-Enrolment for Siblings
We have started the year with over 500 children and our roll is now 535 and continuing to grow. If you have children (or know of children) turning 5 this year, please contact the School Office to start the enrolment process as soon as possible. This helps us manage our class sizes and ensure we have the teaching staff and resources in place for the students starting later in the year.
The Kohimarama Way – Respect
“When you are content to be simply yourself and don’t compare or compete, everybody will respect you.” – Lao-Tzu
“Respect others not because of who they are – but because it’s who you are – someone who respects others.”
School Mufti Day
Thank you to all of you who supported our school mufti day today to raise funds for our fellow New Zealanders in Christchurch. We raised $1,898.80.
Kohi Students get cracking with code in Term 1
Every Tuesday, in a quiet corner of Kohimarama School, a small group of students are learning computer programming with Code Champions. Sometimes you could hear a pin drop; other times, it’s a noisy, collaborative affair. Whichever it is, the outcome is the same. This term, two classes have been successfully developing their computational thinking and having plenty of fun in the process.
