A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents

We are already over half way through this term and the summer weather continues to be with us.

We had a successful Year 5-8 swimming sports last Thursday. A big thanks goes to Anna-Lena and the staff for this well organised and fun event. Thank you to all the parents who joined us and supported the event. It was great to have you along.

Principal’s Sabbatical

I have been awarded a Principal’s Sabbatical by the Ministry of Education for Term 3 2019. My sabbatical will focus on learner agency and will include the Reggio Emilia approach to play based learning. I am attending a conference on learner agency and visiting schools in Italy to see first-hand the philosophies of play based learning in practice. I will be looking at the strategies used and reflecting on our schools approaches. Please see our website regarding our transformations

I am grateful to the Board of Trustees who supported my application. Our two Deputy Principals will be leading the school while I am away in Term 3.

Guidelines on the use of Digital Devices at Kohimarama School

The school provides information on the use of digital devices for learning via our policies and procedures found at SchoolDocs  We also work with students on being a digital citizen (refer SchoolDocs as above) and complying with BYOD requirements should they bring a device to school.

I have reviewed, with staff, the guidelines that we use to operate devices in line with the above and to support learning. These are effective across the school and some changes have been added to the guidelines. I publish this for you here;

  • The sole purpose of the use of devices at school is to support and enhance educational outcomes. Their use is limited to this.
  • Use of personal devices during the school day is at the direction of teachers and teachers monitor the use.
  • Teachers are the professionals and will ensure that if the device is the best tool for learning it is used only for the period required to complete that learning.
  • Headphones cannot be used other than at the direction of the teacher for an educational purpose.
  • The use of a personal device is not to be used for any other purpose other than described above. Students do not have free use of devices.
  • Students will make no attempts to circumvent the school’s network security and/or filtering policies.
  • Students will not capture or distribute voice, pictures or videos of students or staff unless this is directed by teachers within an educational context.
  • Students will not use personal devices outside of their classroom unless otherwise directed by their teacher for educational purposes.
  • Kohimarama School will monitor the activity of students of the network. We do this regularly using Hapara (this allows us to see the past and present content on student devices).
  • The use of personal devices falls under the conditions of the ‘Kohimarama School Cybersafey Policy’, ‘Cybersafety Student Use Agreement’ and the ‘Kohimarama School BYOD Agreement’.

Teacher Paid Union Meeting – Tuesday 19th March

As you may be aware, the New Zealand Education Institute (NZEI) is currently holding the next round of Paid Union Meetings (PUM) for primary teachers who are members.

The Board of Trustees has advised that due to staff attending the next meeting on Tuesday 19th March, the school will be closed for instruction for Year 1 – 6 students for the afternoon.  School will close for these students at 1.00 pm.  Please make arrangements to collect your child at this time.

As Year 7 and 8 students are at Selwyn College for the afternoon, they will continue as usual.  They are escorted to Selwyn for Technology and leave directly from the College as is normal for them.

We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause families and appreciate that this is an unsettling day for students.

The Haque Report on Education

You will have received a letter signed by the Board chair Simon Tucker and myself on this topic. I encourage you to read this and the report and respond within the required timeframe

Paul Engles

The Kohimarama Way – Respect

“Treat people the way you want to be treated.  Talk to people the way you want to be talked to.  Respect is earned  not given.”
“Respect other people’s feelings.  It might mean nothing to you, but it could mean everything to them.”
“Good manners are just a way of showing other people that we have respect for them.”
