Term 4, Week 6 — School news, upcoming dates and notices
A Message from Cowley Team
Cowley’s Trip to Auckland Zoo
Cowley Team had a great day out at the Zoo last Wednesday. We went to learn all about New Zealand native birds and their habitats. As part of the visit, we got to see some New Zealand birds in the giant forest aviaries. We also visited the Kiwi house and looked for kiwis in the dark. A teacher called Sarah talked to us about the animals that have come from other places to New Zealand such as possums, rabbits and stoats. We learnt how these animals have affected our New Zealand birds by eating their eggs and attacking them. This has made many of them endangered or even extinct.
We also got to look at other habitats around the zoo and see lots of other animals.
Here is what some of us thought…
The zoo was fab. We learnt that Meerkats don’t live in the desert and that only 5% of kiwis survive as babies in the wild.
The squirrel monkeys were adorable.
We met a Kaka which is the cousin of the Kea!
The wood pigeon (kereru) can eat these big gigantic yellow berries. They keep eating them until they get sick or go to sleep, get confused and fall off the trees or fly into windows!
When the kereru flies its wings make a big ‘whooffing’ sound.
It was great. We enjoyed seeing animals like the peacock, baboon and cheetah live and up close. We learnt that servals are very small cats and that kiwis are left on their own when they are born to fend for themselves. We got to see 2 live ones in their own habitats.
We loved searching for different native birds in the forest aviaries.

Band Sign-Up Night – Tuesday 20th November @ 6.30 pm
At our school we offer the opportunity for students in Years 4 to 8 to learn either a woodwind or brass instrument and be part of our Beginner Band. To find out more about this, please come along to the Band Sign-Up Night this evening in our school Library. Our Band Director, Miss Middleton-Olliver, will explain what being part of the band looks like and how to rent an instrument. We will also have students who are in our Ensemble Band there to talk to you about what they have gained from being in our Bands and allow your children to try their instruments to see which one they would like to learn in 2019. This is a great opportunity for your child/ren, don’t miss out.
