A Message from Hillary Team
This term we have been busy with trips, production and fundraisers. The Year 5s have just been on an orienteering event where we also got to learn about animals. Earlier this term one of our passion project groups ran a movie screening to fundraise for production. We are really looking forward to the production with all the makeup, costumes and props, we hope we finish in time!
Production
This term the Year 4 and 5 students have been practising for the production. Our dance theme is pop music. We have been learning how to dance and follow a sequence of moves. Some people have been learning songs to sing.
Other students have been busy making costumes, props and backgrounds during passion projects. The production will be held this term in Week 10. Some of Hillary Team children will be main characters. Our main characters are Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Poppy’s Secretary. Production is as entertaining as a magic show.

Ambury Park Orienteering Competition
On Friday we went to Ambury Park for an orienteering trip. Once we were there, a very funny man gave us our maps and answer sheets, then we set off to the checkpoints that each team had chosen. A lot of the fields and paddocks were muddy so lots of people got stuck and lost their shoes! There were more than 100 checkpoints and there were about 15 sustainability challenges. We had about two hours to complete the challenges.
All of the challenges were hard to find and some were a bit confusing. A lot of the teams were slowed down by the mud which made running fast difficult. Most of the checkpoints were camouflaged, so hard to find. The animals in the paddocks seemed very curious when they looked at us. You could tell it is spring because the animals had new babies.
After the race there was prize giving and spot prizes. We had an exciting, tiring and muddy day.

Debating
Last week on Wednesday some members of our debate team attended the inter-school debate competition at St Thomas’s School.
Our moots were:
– “That going to university is good value (negative)”
– “That school zones should be abolished (affirmative)”
– “That animals should be used as test subjects (affirmative)”
The competition was tough and our teams worked really hard.
Congratulations to Violet T, Margo R and Trixie R who won their debate.
Well done to Alice L, Elani R, Zara T-C, Mia Rose B and Charlotte S who gave it their best and to Mia D who received special mention for outstanding delivery.
Thanks to Penny Tucker and Anna Crow for mentoring these teams.
Production Update
So far the ticket sales for the production have been going well. A reminder for you that there are limited seats for each performance and once those are full the ticket sales for that date will close. Be sure to get in before you miss out. If you have any problems with ticket sales, please contact us and we will endeavour to help you out.
Again, big thank you to everyone who has helped with getting the production on so far. We have a production team of teachers with a representative from each team. If you have any queries please contact the production leader for your team. They will approach me if there are any issues they cannot sort.

Walking School Bus’s Special Day
On Thursday 30 August, the Kohimarama Walking School Bus’s had an extra special day!
The day started with the Auckland Transport Winter Wizard joining the Red Bus on it’s walk to school. The Red Bus was a winner in the Winter Wizard photo competition and as a prize the Winter Wizard joined our walk and gave out special tags to those who joined in.
The great day continued with a shared Pizza Lunch for all Walking School Bus students. This was a fun time for those involved and a great chance to celebrate all those who have walked to school over the winter term!
Thanks to Auckland Transport for the Winter Wizard and our Pizza Lunch.
