A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers

What a beautiful day in Kohimarama….. Happy students and staff enjoying the sunshine and warmer weather.

Teacher Strike Action

Simon Tucker, our Board of Trustees’ Chair, has communicated the decision of the Board regarding the school being closed on Wednesday 15th August for the full day. Kohimarama School joins a long list of schools in the Remuera Principals’ group. All schools are aware of the health and safety concerns regarding a reduced workforce and all have responded in the same way.

Teachers are aware that this disruption has an impact on families. The actions taken by teachers was not made lightly. As we stated previously, it has been 22 years since this type of action has been taken by the teaching profession.

Teacher requirement and retention is in crisis, support for teachers to manage the exponentially increasing workload, more resourcing for students, particularly those who require special support, a pay increase to attract the teachers of tomorrow into the profession.  These are some of the issues that have come to the fore through negotiation with successive governments over many years. Unfortunately, in 2018, this has come to a head. We cannot manage by doing what we have always done and responding to the profession in the same way. I hope that we will be able to work through the difficulties and that the children of New Zealand will be the beneficiaries.

Uniform Shop

Our uniform shop is now operating in two formats, namely; 1) In the school hall as usual and 2) online. Both options are being managed by Gabrielle Findlay. As you will recall, and based on your feedback, we are trialling these options for the next two terms.

The Kohimarama Way – Respect

“Take care of your reputation.  It’s your most valuable asset.”  -Anonymous.
“There is a longing among all people to have a sense of purpose and worth.  To satisfy that common longing in all of us, we must respect each other.”  – Chief Dan George

School Disco – Friday 17th August

Junior Disco (Years 0 to 4)  5.00pm to 6.00pm

Dress as colourful as you can, we are thinking ‘neon’.  Our student leaders will be looking for the most colourful boy and girl to give a prize to on the night.

Senior Disco (Years 5 to 8)  6.30 to 8.00pm

Dress in your usual 21st century clothes.  To be in to win the prize for best dressed boy or girl, we are looking for colour, colour, colour.

Tickets will be on sale next week before and after school outside the library for $5. There will be no door sales on the night, as we need to ensure we have enough snacks and drinks for all who attend. Please make sure that your children are picked up from inside the hall at the end of their Disco. We are going to have a lot of fun!!

Band Showcase  –  Wednesday 8th August @ 6.30pm

We are celebrating our three bands: Beginner, Intermediate and Ensemble at a Showcase being held in our Hall.  You are warmly invited to attend and enjoy the talent of our musicians and the progress they have made so far this year.  It is a free event and an opportunity for our Bands to be able to perform in front of an appreciative audience – bring your grandparents, aunts, uncles and neighbours. Thank you to Susanna Middleton-Olliver and her able tutors for all the hard work they do to support our students  –  it is going to be an entertaining hour of music!! Musicians are asked to be in the Performing Arts room at 6.10pm on the night, thank you.

Congratulations Caleb W  –  Year 8

Wow!  One of our Year 8 students Caleb, who plays rugby, was selected from the Grammar Junior Club to trial for the  Remuera Walter Dixon team. Caleb made this illustrious team and, in the following tournament, his team won.  From this tournament Caleb was selected to trial for the Roller Mills team.  Caleb trialled with 56 other players and was selected to be part of the team.  This is a monumentous achievement and we are incredibly thrilled for Caleb and proud of all his hard work.  Going forward, Caleb will represent Auckland East over the season playing against various regions.  This will culminate in  the North Island Championship in Cambridge in  a few weeks time.

Congratulations Jezzabella B – Year 6

Jezzabella competed in the International Judo competition in the last holidays.  The competition took place at the ASB stadium and included competitors from within New Zealand, from Australia and the Pacific Islands.  Jezzabella competed in the senior level and was so good, she won gold!  Major congratulations to her for such a fabulous achievement.

School Cross Country Thursday 16th August – Madills Farm
Rain Day – Tuesday 21st of August

Please find below the finalised schedule of when we intend to begin races. I say, ‘intend to begin’ because as you know it depends on the number of pupils running on the day and the weather. All parents are welcome to come and encourage your child as they run our Cross Country course. Children are expected to stay on after races and will sit with the other children who are in the same House team. We will try our best to run on time however, we cannot guarantee exact times and we thank you for your patience.  We suggest you allow yourself 20-30 minutes before the scheduled time of your child’s race. If it is too wet, then we will run the school course instead.

We would really appreciate all spectators sitting/standing on the outside of the running track. Please be mindful of younger siblings as pupils will be running by where you are seated/standing. Additionally, for safety reasons we would ask that you please do not bring dogs nor purchase treats to deliver to your child at the conclusion of their race.
