A Message from Kiri Team
Tena Koutou Katoa
We hope you are staying warm, dry and healthy and you have not been washed away! We are now well into the swing of Term Two and the classrooms have been buzzing with new learning.
Constable Gordon has been a highlight over the past week for our Keeping Ourselves Safe focus. He has been working with the whole school as part of a joint initiative between schools and the New Zealand Police. Keeping ourselves safe enables children and young people to learn and apply a range of safety skills that they can use when interacting with others. This is a child protection programme with a variety of focus areas appropriate for each age level. In Kiri Team, he has been educating the children about personal safety behaviours including safe touch, how to ask for help, and learning a parental phone number and home address.
The Kohimarama Way this term is Honesty and children have been learning what this means to them through role play, stories, and pictures. They know that telling the truth feels right and this is helping them in making sensible decisions. To our five year olds, honesty means truth and trust.
This week has been most exciting with children auditioning for the Kohimarama Junior Talent Show. Clearly there is a wealth of talent within Kiri Team and well done to all those who entered. A special mention to Jensen K who was selected for the finals. Last Tuesday was the final for the whole school. It was very hard to select the winners. There were singers, drummers, dancers, pianists, and even magicians cutting people in half and having magical numbers. A truly wonderful afternoon of entertainment.
On Wednesday afternoons Kiri Team are learning gymnastics: balance, rolls, jumps, stretches and landings. Gymnastics provides a great base for all sports as it develops speed, flexibility, coordination, and balance, and assists in developing a good sense of body awareness. Taking part in gymnastics at a young age can build the foundations of good all-around muscle strength, endurance, and power.
We are excited as next week all students are receiving a visit from Science Show – Imagination Experience. This fits perfectly in with our exploration inquiry about space.
The Kohimarama Way – Honesty
“Honesty is contagious, just like dishonesty is contagious. We need more honesty in the world.” Anne Wilson Schaef. “Honesty is doing what you know is right.” “Honesty does not guarantee success, but it is an honourable and respected way to achieve honestly earned success.” Dr T.P. Chia.
School Fundraising – SPCA
On Friday 8th June we are raising funds for the SPCA. All students had the opportunity to share the charity they would like to raise funds for this term and the majority chose this charity, which looks after and protects animals in need. If your child would like to participate they are able to wear mufti on this day and bring $2. Thank you for your support.
PTA Working Bee – Thank you!
I would like to acknowledge the PTA and parents who attended the school working bee on Sunday. This was a well planned event that saw several garden areas enhanced and areas tidied.
Parents worked solidly and supported each other to ensure that, despite the predictions of rain and cold temperatures, the jobs were successfully completed.
Thanks you from all of us. You rock!!
Glendowie College Parents Information Evening
‘2019 Enrolment Process’
Glendowie College will be holding a ‘Parents Information Evening’ on Wednesday 27 June 2018 at 7:00 pm in the college library.
The purpose of the meeting is to cover the enrolment process for 2019 Year 9 students’ enrolments.
This is an opportunity to meet informally with Richard Dykes, Glendowie College Principal, to have any questions answered about the enrolment process.
We look forward to seeing there. No RSVP is required.
