A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents

Welcome back to Kohimarama School for Term Two. I have enjoyed returning to a new term and to walk through the classrooms yesterday to see the happy faces of students and teachers.

The last two weeks have given opportunity to celebrate and to take part in traditional activities during Easter and remember a key moment in our nation’s history with ANZAC Day. I would like to welcome new families to the school. You are joining a learning community that works collaboratively and seeks to provide the best opportunities for learning for all our students. Thank you to our parents who I see and hear welcoming new people to our school. In doing this you model the Kohimarama School values to your children.

In thinking about celebrations, I will be away from Kohimarama School at my daughter’s wedding in Fiji. She is the first of my three children to be married and we are looking forward to catching up with wider family and friends. Both Meegan Hill and Debbie Ellery will lead the school in my absence. I am away from Thursday 3 May and returning to Kohimarama School on Monday 14 May. My thanks to the Board for their support of my leave.

You will note that the lines have been re-marked on the tennis courts for our winter sports and we will soon have some octagonal tables set up in the top playground. For both of these additions we thank the PTA.

At the beginning of this year our school communications group launched our new website and tailored our content to the needs expressed in our survey in 2017. This term we are launching our school app.

Download Our New School Phone App – Flexibuzz

Is it house t-shirt day this week? When do I order sushi again? Now you can get reminders to your smartphone.

Flexibuzz is a communications app that will notify you on your smartphone, tablet or computer about key dates, events and alerts. The app also includes easy access to the school calendar, newsletters and contacting the school.

For download instructions and information about how we are using the app go to our Flexibuzz page.

More about the Flexibuzz App

I would like to again thank the PTA for their continued support of the school and their dedication to continual improvement of the digital communication methods.

A Note from the Board of Trustees

The Board is looking for a minute secretary for their monthly meetings. There are 10 meetings per year and the work required is to; minute the meeting and provide draft to the Chairperson within a few days. The approximate time required would be 2-3 hours per meeting. If you would like to take on this role for the school please contact: Simon Tucker, Chairperson,

The Kohimarama Way – Honesty

Being honest is being open, trustworthy and truthful. When people are honest, they can be relied on not to lie, cheat, or steal. Honesty is telling the truth. It is admitting mistakes even when you know someone might be angry or disappointed. Being honest means that you don’t pretend to be something you are not. With honesty, you can trust things to be as they appear.

Keeping Ourselves Safe  –  Parent Meeting Tuesday 8th May

In weeks three and four of this term our students will be taking part in the above Health unit.  This programme is taught bi-annually throughout New Zealand by schools as part of their Health Curriculum.

What is KOS?

Keeping Ourselves Safe (KOS) is a school-based personal safety programme that provides children and young people with skills to cope with situations that might involve abuse. KOS:

  • teaches students a range of safe practices they can use when interacting with other people;
  • encourages students who have been, or are being abused to seek help;
  • contributes to an overall community prevention programme by making parents and teachers more aware of their responsibilities to help children avoid abuse.

For more information, you can access all the KOS resources here, or see the frequently asked questions.

  • Years 1-3 focus is Knowing What to Do
  • Years 4-6 focus is Getting Help
  • Years 7-8 focus is Standing up for Myself

Please come and find out more next week on Tuesday 8th May with our Community Constable, Constable Gordon Campbell, and members of staff. We will be corresponding with you this week to get an idea of numbers:

7.00-7.45pm   Kiri & Cowley Team parents, Rooms 22 & 23 – right next to the office
7.45-8.30pm   Hillary & Snell Team parents, Rooms 19 & 20

Kohimarama School Junior Talent Quest  –  Years 1 to 4

It is that exciting time of year again when our students share their talents in singing, dancing or musical instruments.  Entry forms are in classes now and they will be collected next week. We have a piano at school, but all other instruments will need to be brought to school on the day. If students are dancing they will need to bring the music they will perform to. Our singers are able to sing without music or use a backing tape, preferably without the words being sung – apparently you can go on Youtube and get music without the lyrics?  It is going to be fun, a great opportunity to be involved and a chance to perform.

Mega Magical Mystery Raffle

Snell students are fundraising for the whole school production with a Mega Magical Mystery Raffle. There are loads of great prizes to be won, including sports equipment, movie tickets, vouchers, gourmet cheese packs, board games and more.

Tickets are $2 each and on-sale outside hall before and after school this week and next week. The raffle will be drawn at first available assembly.

Help Wanted! Our Library needs you!

Are you able to spare some time to come and help cover books?  If this is something you think you could assist with please contact the Librarian, , or feel free to pop in and help out when you can, or come and grab a small pile to cover at home.
