Update from the Principal

Dear Parents, It has been a year of change with me coming to the school, firstly as the Acting Principal and later, appointed as your full time, permanent Principal. I was overwhelmed by the very positive parent community response to me taking the reins and this has continued after my appointment. There is much to do to make our good school great and I am looking forward with confidence in taking the next steps. Thank you to the Board of Trustees who donate their time to the school willingly to ensure that we are all successful together.

I would like to thank everyone in our school community, students, staff, parents, caregivers, grandparents and friends for your support of our school this year. The school’s success rests on the shoulders of all who invest themselves in our learning community. Thank you.

I would also like to thank Mattie and Lynda and the PTA team for the huge amount of work they put into the many projects that we undertook as a school. There was always tremendous support for each event and a great turn out of school families. Thank you.

Thank you to all those who contributed to the ‘Shaping the Future’ dialogues throughout the year. We have made significant developments with our Year 7 & 8 programme and have ensured that these developments will continue into 2018. We have had a fifteen point change from 40% to 55% of Year 6 choosing to remain at Kohimarama School for Year 7 & 8. In 2018 I see this partnership with parents continuing to grow. We have also been collecting information about how we best communicate the important school information in good time and in the best way. Post these discussions a group of parents are working with me to redesign and redevelop our website, and to provide easy accessibility for important functions such as absence reporting, etc. Thank you to these parents who are giving their time and expertise. Watch this space as we begin 2018.

We will be welcoming a new staff member to the Kohimarama Team in 2018; Jim Dyer will join us as a Year 7 & 8 teacher. Jim comes from Scotland and has a wealth of experience in boy’s education at this level. We are confident that he will add greatly to our Year 7 & 8 hub.

Please ensure you read the information in the newsletter today regarding our final school assembly to be held at the Sacred Heart College Auditorium. It is a special end of year event, we will see you there for the start of the assembly at 10.30 am. Please see Page 3 for full details.

Please be aware that your children are receiving their end of year reports, class placement information and 2018 stationery purchase information on Thursday. This year we are having students meet their teacher for 2018 and their classmates at the beginning of Block 3 on Thursday. The purpose is to assist students to know where they are going, have time with their teacher where they can get to know them a little (they’ll bring home an A5 introduction for you as well) and know which other students are in the same class for 2018.

You may like to diary the first key school event in 2018 which will be the Meet the Teacher evening on Tuesday 20 February 2018.

Final Prizegiving Assembly – Friday 15th December 10.30am, Sacred Heart College

The Kohimarama School Prizegiving Assembly is our last day of school and all our students are expected to attend in correct school uniform. It is a great opportunity for us to meet together, celebrate the year and the outstanding achievements of our students. In order for us to get there, students are transported by their parents to and from our Final Assembly at Sacred Heart College, 250 West Tamaki Road, Glendowie. Students in Cowley, Hillary and Snell Teams will meet with their class teacher at the front of the Auditorium at 10.00am and will walk in together as a class. Kiri Team students sit with their parents, so may arrive at 10.20am.

Students in the Ensemble Band, Choir and Kapa Haka need to be at the Auditorium no later than 9.20am, as we will be having a sound check for these groups before the Assembly begins.

Car parking can be found on West Tamaki Road and Crossfield Road, plus Gate 4, which leads to a big parking area down by the pool. We expect the Assembly to finish at 12 noon, and students may be picked up from the front of the Auditorium at this time. Sacred Heart College has given permission for our families to picnic on the school grounds, if you wish, after our Final Assembly.

Road Patrol Parents – Thank You

Thank you to our parents who supervised our Road Patrollers each morning for half an hour. Your support in this way was invaluable and really appreciated by us all.

School Mosaic Pole

Designed by Max L, six Snell Team students have worked alongside Mrs Crow to mosaic a 1.5m pole. The pole, which features Rangitoto and a native koru, has been placed in the Kiri Team garden by the junior entrance. Well done to Zara T-C, Sophia A, Ian S, Mick P, Rhys G and Max L.
